Genre - Thriller, Action
Revenge is a French film directed by Coralie Fargeat and is about a young woman Jen (Matilda Lutz) who goes in a secluded home in the middle of a desert with her millionaire boyfriend Richard (Kevin Janssens). All seemed to be going according to the plan until Richard's two friends Stan (Vincent Colombe) and Dimitri (Guillaume Bouchede) arrive at the spot. Jen is raped by Stan, and Richard kills her and leaves her to die in the desert.
From the wide opening shot of the desert itself, the movie takes you inside it and never leaves you until it finishes. It is a rape revenge drama that is not afraid to spill blood all over the place. If you are a type of person who can't handle brutal killings and a lot of blood, then stay away from this film as it has many frames covered with blood. The rape-revenge drama is nothing new in our cinema, and you would have seen movies like last year's Wind River depicting it. Revenge showcases some killings and wounds in its raw form and can put your hands on your eyes during some sequences. Coralie Fargeat who has written and as well as directed this film makes sure that you are fully invested in the movie and only look away whenever there is too much blood for you to handle but you get back again in the film and never lose the connection with it. The violence in the movie is like the scorching sun that doesn't go gently for the characters in the film, it burns and dries you up. Storywise the film doesn't offer something new which you wouldn't have seen before, it's the bloody treatment it gets that makes it enjoyable I guess. Also, the character arc of Jen in the film changes significantly from a beauty to a ferocious beast, and that makes up for something worth a watch. An over the top dramatic scene involving an ant (I guess) trying to get past a massive amount of blood falling on him adds up to the depth of the movie. The pacing and performances of all the casts are excellent and special mention should be given to Matilda Lutz for performing some daring scenes in front of the camera and Coralie Fargeat for directing the film without shying away from anything.
There are scenes that defy logic as a character comes back to life after going through a very fatal accident and coming back to life from something like that is quite impossible and senseless. Also there are times when the characters do something in the movie where you think if they could just do it a bit differently, they will succeed in there motives.
In the end, Revenge may not be a masterpiece, and you could dig up plenty of loopholes from it, but that should not take away the fun gore fest it offers and a nail-biting tense finale that will inevitably raise your pulse with excitement and terror.
