Psycho III Movie Review - Return To The Bates Motel
Picking up one month after the events of Psycho II, Psycho III takes us back to the Bates Motel for yet another bloody night and some series of brutal murders. Norman Bates continues to run the motel, but his life gets twisted again when a nurse with suicidal tendencies checks in his motel.

For those familiar with the Psycho series, Norman Bates (Anthony Perks) may be a character well known to you as the whole Psycho series is based on him. You can never forget the famous shower scene from the Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 film Psycho which turned out to be one of the most iconic scenes in the history of the cinema. Although I believe that it was unnecessary to stretch the film in four parts making a total of four Psycho movies, I did enjoy watching the sequels (I have not watched the fourth one), and while they cannot be compared to the original, they make up for a decent watch. So, Psycho III further continues the journey of Norman Bates and takes place one month after the events of Psycho II. This movie introduces Maureen Coyle (Diana Scarwid) who is shown to be mentally unstable at the beginning of the film, and she resembles one of the former victims of Norman named Marion Crane who was seen in the Hitchcock's Psycho. It also introduces Duane Duke (Jeff Fahey) who is a sleazy musician who ends up working for Norman in the motel, and there is also a journalist here named Tracy (Roberta Maxwell) who is following the incident that took place in Psycho II and wants to solve the murder of Emma Spool.
As I said earlier, the sequels are a decent watch and can be watched by anyone who wants to explore the life of Norman Bates further and revisit his motel. I think Anthony Perks loved his character so much that he ended up directing this one and he did a pretty nice job. He made good use of alcohol and also induced some sexual scenes in the movie. He made the film more sexual and violent and was not afraid to spill blood all over the place. The presence of Maureen haywires Norman's life as his "mother" starts killing again, and Norman, as usual, cleans up the mess made by her "mother". There is a particular scene in the film that scared me and gave me all the goosebumps, and you will know it when it will come on screen. The film tried to explore the romantic side of Norman and made him vulnerable and sweet at a point, but if you have watched the previous movies, you know how it all ends. As for character development, nothing changes in Norman although his motel's status changes from empty to full from time to time. Because of this, you might end up guessing the finale as in the end, after watching the first two films, you fully understand the psychology of Norman, and hence you easily guess his decisions in this film. But that doesn't take away the fact that as a thriller, it is quite decent and manages to provide fun even when predictable.
The performance of Anthony Perks is fantastic as usual, and he gets comfortably inside the skin of his character and acts as he owns it. Diana Scarwid was pretty amazing, and I thought she did an excellent job in playing the character of a naive and sweet woman. Jeff Fahey enjoys his time by drinking, flirting and banging women and tries to not miss any opportunity in having a sexual relationship with any hot chick. He was very believable in his part. Roberta Maxwell was also fine in this movie.
This film also has its fair share of stupid character choices that make you scratch your head in anger. The climax scene in particular displays a terrible decision made by a character that you end up shouting "Really!".
If not compared to the original and watched casually, Psycho III ends up being a decent watch that can be enjoyed by you. It has its moments of thrill and shock which in the end do provide entertainment if you are willing to kill your time and want to revisit the Bates Motel.
