The Uninvited is a remake of the 2003 South Korean horror film A Tale of Two Sisters. Since I have not watched the South Korean movie, I can't compare this remake to it, and hence I will review it on its own basis. Anna (Emily Browning) spends ten months in a psychiatric institution due to her suicide attempt after her terminally ill mother died in a boathouse fire. She gets released and returns to the house and finds out her father's new girlfriend Rachel (Elizabeth Banks) acting as her new mother. She doesn't like her, and neither does her sister Alex (Arielle Kebbel) and they together as the movie progresses come to believe that Rachel might be involved in the murder of there mother. I won't talk anymore about the plot as it will only spoil the twisted fun for you.
I didn't expect much from this film and thought that it would turn out to be another cheesy horror film with loads of jump scares and scenes involving typical horror cliches. But I ended up enjoying this film more than I expected and had a good time with it. From the starting few minutes of the movie to the very end of it, this movie had traces of some classic horror films like The Shining, The Sixth Sense and Rosemary's Baby. If you would have watched these movies, you will surely find some scenes that will remind you of the mentioned films. For the most part of the film, I was trying to guess the climax, but it did come as a shock in the end, and I was surprised by it. The film played smartly, and if you analyse it, the climax makes sense, and it is not just planted there to give you a shock, it does make sense, and it is legitimately planted throughout the film. From the beginning itself, the pacing of the film is set to fast, and it continues throughout so you would have to catch up with it to be in sync with the storyline.
The performance of Emily Browning was quite good, and she manages to keep your eyes on her. Elizabeth Banks is the best among the lot, and she is the one who gives her best in the film. Arielle Kebbel is perfect in her role as a sassy teenager and a caring sister. David Strathairn did not have much to do here but was good in his part as the dad of her two daughters. I would like to appreciate The Guard Brothers who directed this movie as they did a good job in translating the South Korean film for the English speaking audience.
The problem with this movie is the same as that of other horror movies. The scary sequences that turn out to be a dream. The cheap trick of the jump scare which does not have any effect in this film. For a movie that comes under the horror genre, this does not come off as a horror film at all, but it can be said to be a fascinating suspense movie which I actually found the film to be. The horror part of the film didn't work for me.
All in all, The Uninvited is a good movie which I enjoyed a lot, and it can be watched at least once as it is quite enjoyable and has a good twist which will leave many of you shocked.
