Mirchi Malini Review - Lies and Deceit
A lady who can read minds of the people's just by eating their handmade recipe decides to invite four women to her gathering after two years of being away from the spotlight. What follows is a night of truth and exposure and a looming question as to whether why only these four women were invited? Is there a bigger picture here?
Cast - Paoli Dam, Shradha Das, Tara-Alisha Berry, Neha Chauhan, Rukhsar Rehman, Akshay Oberoi
Directed By - Pratim D. Gupta
Genre - Thriller
The table is set, and the guests have arrived. Everybody takes there seats and the revelation of truth begins. Mirchi Malini is a weird name, and she has an odd way to read the minds of the people. You give her a dish made by you, and she will eat it and tell about your past. At the beginning of the movie, we see a couple in distress who have lost the spark between them, and they reach out to Mirchi Malini (Paoli Dam) for any suggestions. She reveals the truth about her wife's affair, and it causes permanent damage to the couple's relation. The wife gets devastated and curses Malini that one day she too will face her ugly truth. We are then cut two years after this incident and from the minimum dialogues that take place, we get to know that Malini has lost her publicity and wants to become known again and so she sends out invitation to four women's who are not connected to each other in any way and she also releases a YouTube video which goes on No. 2 on the trending page. All the women's decide to go to Malini's for there own reasons, one woman is her fan while the other wants to know the truth about all the mind reading and find out whether if its all a hoax. There's a celebrity who wants to be returned to the spotlight and there's a journalist who is present there to uncover the truth.
Mirchi Malini has an interesting premise which can be set up for horror or a murder mystery plot. But the writers go for a different approach which has some interesting twists and turns, and that too is satisfying. The major theme of the movie relies on the relationship between the modern-day married couples and how an affair ruins the life of a husband and wife. The affect of an extramarital affair on both the lives of the cheater and the person who is cheating is shown in the film which is one of the best aspects of this movie. I liked the way the main characters are introduced in the film, Malini eats there food and tells us about there backstory, and I found it an exciting way to introduce the characters. The performances are also good here, Paoli Dam of the Hate Story fame is convincing in her part, and much of the film relies on her. But the other actors too help in lifting the weight of the movie with my favourite being the character of Kusum played by Tara Alisha who is a housewife. As an actor, her performance has been significantly improved from the last time when I saw her in Vikram Bhatt's 2016 film Love Games. The remaining actors like Shradha Das, Neha Chauhan and Rukhsar Rehman were right in there parts but didn't entirely open up and felt restricted but we can't blame them as the script was written in this way, and they did there best to utilise their parts and deliver sincerely. Akshay Oberoi was also fine in his role, and his character is significant in the film which would be revealed to you at the end of the film.
I didn't like the way the film was being directed in some parts like the constant cutting from character to character during a conversation was unnecessary. A stable frame could have easily saved the day and would have been more riveting. Since it is a short film so the runtime is also approximately of 40 minutes and hence it is also the reason why we don't fully connect with the characters, but I think they didn't want to go for that and just show the main plot around which this movie is centred.
In the long run, I enjoyed watching Mirchi Malini and would suggest you to give it a try as it is interesting and has some nice twists attached to it which will surely not disappoint you.
