Call Me By Your Name Movie Review - The Road Less Travelled
The summer of 1983 brings together a 17-year-old Elio (Timothee Chalamet) and his father's 24-year-old graduate-student assistant Oliver (Armie Hammer). There relationship blossoms under the beautiful rays of the summer sun and leaves us with a memory both beautiful and moving.
Cast - Timothee Chalamet, Armie Hammer, Michael Stuhlbarg, Amira Casar, Esther Garrel
Directed By - Luca Guadagnino
Genre - Drama, Romance
Call Me By Your Name is based on a novel of the same name by Andre Aciman and is directed by Luca Guadagnino and it tells the story of a romantic relationship between Elio and Oliver. Elio is a 17-year-old who lives with his parents in rural Northern Italy, and his father is a professor of archaeology who invites Oliver to live with them during the summer and help with his academic paperwork. Thus, begins a formation of a beautiful bond and understanding between Elio and Oliver.
Call Me By Your Name is one of those few romantic movies that are successful in creating an atmosphere filled with passion and love. The film is so real and alive that you feel like you are present with the characters and are witnessing the events from somewhere close by. The frames cover up the whole screen and the sounds are captured in the most realistic way possible. In a scene involving Elio and Oliver having a conversation outside a street, the characters raise there voices whenever a car passes by them, the makers didn't lower down the noises made by the car and filmed the whole sequence in a way that would feel very real. The entire movie is shot in this way, and that helps the audience to get fully involved with the film. This is one of the most romantic and intimate films I have seen in a long time which has two very passionate characters in the lead. It's erotic, it's sensual and features some profoundly moving emotional scenes. I also liked the fact that there were no unnecessary drama or hurdles present on there way because it could have felt a bit forced and the makers here tried to focus on making the film as authentic as possible. The movie captures the locations and the surroundings so well that you feel like you are present in Italy with the characters riding along with them on the roads and the streets. What is worth noticing is that the film does not follow the basic cinema rules and doesn't unfold like most of the movies, it does not follow the traditional storytelling. Also the film features so many flies in it that you start wondering whether they have any deeper meaning attached to them, I like to think they do as this is a very well made film and the flies could have some meaning to them and it is fun to think about it. I have developed a huge respect for the director of the film as he had made this film with all his love and hard work.
The music in the film is as breathtaking as the story and deserves a special mention here. Sufjan Stevens has created a masterpiece for the movie by composing songs namely "Mystery of Love", "Visions of Gideon" and "Futile Devices" which was a re-recording of his 2010 song.
Apart from all the technicality, the performances from the actors too provide more depth to this movie and make it more raw and real. The relationship between Elio and Oliver is sultry and incredibly romantic, and the actors Armie Hammer and Timothee Chalamet did a fantastic job of bringing out the emotions of the characters on screen. Michael Stuhlbarg as Elio's father will give you goosebumps with his exceptionally mind-blowing performance, watch out for the scene where he advises his son at the end of the film.
The film is deliberately made as a slow burner, and hence, the pacing is very slow here. Many people would find the film boring because of this reason, and most of them would point it towards the flaw in the film. It will all depend from person to person and is not a thing that will bother everyone. If you are the one who has problems with slow burners then you will have a problem with it otherwise you will enjoy the slow buildup the film offers and how it slowly builds up a beautiful relationship between the two characters.
Time is the villain in the movie, and like the summer, the film too ends after a runtime of 132 minutes leaving you with feelings of love, passion and heartbreak. Definitely watch this movie if you get the opportunity. A sure shot recommendation from me.
