Winchester Movie Review - Welcome To The Cliched Haunted House Movie
In 1906, the Winchester company hired doctor Eric Price (Jason Clarke) to asses Sarah Winchester (Helen Mirren) as they believe she is mentally unfit to remain in charge of the company. Upon his arrival at the Winchester mansion, Eric starts seeing strange paranormal apparitions around the house and begins to question its existence.

Sarah Winchester is determined to build the Winchester mansion which has an odd but beautiful design. But what she is actually creating is a prison for many vengeful ghosts, more like an asylum. Her belief in spirits and paranormal is the reason behind the decision made by the Winchester company to hire doctor Eric Price to asses the mental state of Sarah Winchester. What follows are a series of events involving plenty of jump scares and objects moving around by themselves which all combine to give us this movie.
This movie has a beautiful set design, and the grand mansion is a hell of a site to look at. It is long and has a grand staircase within it which are all quite magnificent. The production value and the costume designs are worth your praise. Also, the performances of the actors in the movie are excellent. Helen Mirren gives her best as Sarah Winchester and tries hard to take this film on another level. Jason Clark is a fantastic actor, and here also he manages to shine in the darkness. Sarah Nook was also pretty good in her portrayal of a caring woman. Sadly, Winchester has nothing more to offer apart from good performances and beautiful production design. It is basically your average horror film filled with cliches.
It comes as a surprise that the director's Spierig Brothers who had made movies like Daybreakers (2010) and the mind-blowing Predestination (2014) have directed this movie which has nothing new or unique to offer, it is filled with jump scares and loud noises accompanying it. The objects fly around and move on there own, voices are heard from far away rooms, mysterious figures walk down the corridors, everything present here is already seen millions time before, and the film never improves upon it. What it does do differently is that it delays the scare for a few minutes like the mirror's turn two or three times on there own before revealing the ghostly figure in front of you. I love horror movies, and that is the reason I decided to watch Winchester, but to my disappointment, there is nothing to like here. The film has not come out from the old school cliched haunted house movie hangover and doesn't even try to do anything to cure the illness. Even the lead character in the film doctor Eric Price is another let down for the movie. He has one of the worst character introductions I have seen in a film, and for the most of the film, you don't even care about him at all. Another reason for no proper connection with the lead character is because we don't get to see his backstory for a long time, the film reveals the backstory about his character during its final moments.
Winchester is a disappointing addition to the horror movies list, and it features ideas that are done to death. Although I don't suggest watching it but if you are the one who doesn't have the time or budget to visit the Winchester mansion for real and want to see it somehow, then you can watch this film to witness the grand design and interiors of the mansion.
