Tomb Raider Movie Review - A Visit to the Croft Manor

When Lara (Alicia Vikander) comes to know about her father's (Dominic West) secret life as an adventurer, she decides to go on a quest to find him and to seek the truth about his disappearance.

Cast - Alicia Vikander, Dominic West, Walton Goggins, Daniel Wu

Directed By - Roar Uthaug

Genre - Action, Adventure

Lara is an independent young daughter of Richard Croft, an adventurer who vanished years ago. She is fierce and a fighter who can break bones and takes up challenges. Her life takes an interesting twist when she comes to know about her father's secret life and decides to solve the mystery behind his disappearance.

Movies that are video game adaptations generally don't get along well with both the audiences and the critics. The source material gets reduced to a money making machine for the studios who don't seem to get as to why we love the games, a recent example being 2016's Assassin's Creed. Thankfully, director Roar Uthaug makes Tomb Raider an exception as this is one of the best video game adaptations to have come out in recent times. I liked the way the character of Lara Croft is developed in the movie. She is a fighter but hasn't killed anyone and hence, we see a faint expression of shock and terror when she performs her first kill. If you have played the 2013 Tomb Raider game and enjoyed it as I did, then you will probably enjoy this movie too. Some of the game's visuals like Lara climbing a wrecked plane and jumping from the sinking ship in slo-mo are all taken directly from the video game and inserted in the movie. In this way, this is one of the most faithful adaptations of a video game into a film. The character choices and the way she gets her weapons are all similar to the game and are produced exactly in the same way in the movie. The earlier Tomb Raider games and the film involving Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft sexualised the character. The rebooted 2013 game and this movie portrayed her as an unobjectified heroine.

Known for her works in films like The Danish Girl and Ex Machina, Alicia Vikander does a fantastic job of portraying the character of Lara Croft in the movie and does justice to the character. She gives her best and never lets the character down.

The movie does have some physics problem, but if you are familiar with the Tomb Raider series, you would know it. There are some action scenes like Lara falling from a waterfall or crashing into the trees with a parachute which Lara should not have survived as she is not a superhero, she is a normal human being with exceptional fighting skills. But this is something the majority of the audience will ignore in the movie and something which is also ignored in the game because, in the end, the film does provide fun and entertainment which is sufficient. Also, the twist in the end when revealed seemed far-fetched and unbelievable.

Tomb Raider is not a great movie as it has some plot and filmmaking flaws in it but that doesn't take away the fact that it is the most faithful video game adaption of a movie and that too a good one.
