Luck By Chance Movie Review - Hopes, Ambitions and Luck
An actor wants to make it big in the Bollywood and arrives at the "City of Dreams" to fulfill his dream. How he achieves his dream while trying to sustain relationships forms the story.
Cast - Farhan Akhtar, Konkana Sen Sharma, Dimple Kapadia, Rishi Kapoor, Isha Sharvani
Directed By - Zoya Akhtar
Genre - Comedy, Drama
Vikram (Farhan Akhtar) wants to make it big in the Bollywood industry. He is not alone in his struggle as Sona (Konkana Sen Sharma), although has done some small roles in the film industry, wants to do a leading role in a full feature film. But stardom is not easy as there is a sacrifice to be made to achieve your dream and to make a place for yourself in this glamorous world filled with bright stars.
Luck By Chance takes us inside the Bollywood film industry and shows us how a star is born. The movie doesn’t dramatise issues like nepotism and casting couch, and it shows it in the most realistic way possible. Director Zoya Akhtar uses Bollywood as a background to bring forth the story about dreams, the selfish nature of the humankind and the glittering success that you finally achieve – the fruit of your labour. Another reason for choosing the Bollywood is because it is her home and she knows and understands it better and hence can portray her story seamlessly on screen. In a scene involving Anurag Kashyap trying to change the character in the script, goes too deep in his thoughts and is cut short by Rishi Kapoor’s character who says that “We don’t want to make a festival film”. He also says that these movies involving “over the top thinking” would not work in Bollywood as audience here is different. The film subtly implies the masala taste of the Indian audience who do not give the content the amount of preference that they generally give to a high budget star-studded film. The movie also shows how the filmmakers make the film according to the audiences taste to grab big fat cash at the box office. But Luck By Chance never takes sides; it shows the fault in both the industry and the audience. However, Luck By Chance is not only about Bollywood and the life in it, but the film is also all about dreams and aspirations. The language is universal as everyone sees dreams. The desire for achieving or reaching one’s destination and the hard work involved is something everyone can relate to.
Zoya Akhtar is one of the few directors in the industry who marries content with entertainment and never let’s one weigh down the other. She strikes a perfect balance between the two which makes her films to be enjoyed by both the movie buffs and the masses. She can tell you a story about three friends and their relationship which changes with respect to the change in places they visit across Spain (Zindagi Na Milegi Dobaara) or she can also manage to tell a story about a dysfunctional family on a cruise ship (Dil Dhadkne Do) without excessively dramatizing it or making it too comical.
Another plus point for the film is the cast which delivers exceptional performances. Farhan Akhtar is sincere in his portrayal of showing a common man's journey to the stardom. Konkana Sen Sharma is my favourite among the lot consisting of many well-known faces including the cameos. She is extraordinary in every film, and here too she creates wonders and overshadows other actors with her exceptional performance. The final scene involving her walking through the streets of Mumbai with her voice over in the background reminded me of her another film titled Wake Up Sid! which had a similar scene like this in it. Seasonal actors like Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia have inevitably not lost their acting skills with the passing time and are as fresh and energetic as they were before. Isha Sharvani perfectly pulled off the character of a star son dumped in the Bollywood having no acting skills.
During its theatrical release, the film had poorly performed at the box office which is a disappointment as this film is astonishing and delightful to watch. It is available on Amazon Prime, and I insist you to watch this excellent piece of cinema made for all the movie lovers out there.
