Race 3 Movie Review - Run Away From This Race

The third entry in the Race franchise runs out of steam, thrill and an engaging plot. Salman Khan brings over his "charisma" in the latest instalment and makes it dull, long and exhausting.

Cast - Salman Khan, Daisy Shah, Bobby Deol, Anil Kapoor, Jacqueline Fernandez, Saqib Saleem, Sharat Saxena

Directed By - Remo D'Souza

Genre - Action, Thriller

The Race is back with a third installment in the franchise, and unlike the previous movies where we had a charming and dashing Saif Ali Khan, here we have Salman Khan who brings his "swag" and "muscles" to the franchise, and also the directors Abbas-Mustan are replaced by the choreographer turned director Remo D'Souza. The plot is basically about a hard drive which contains some politicians intimate moments with call girls and whoever gets the hard drive will have the upper hand and so the race to retrieve the hard drive begins.

You know that the movie is going to be bad when its trailer contains scenes featuring actors saying dialogues like "Our Business is Our Business, None of Your Business". But still, you walk into the theatre with a ray of hope that maybe the movie would turn out to be watchable if not even good. Race 3 successfully trashes all your hopes and shows a finger to your expectations as it is all about "What You See (in the trailers) Is What You Get". Forget about it being a one-time watch; you will struggle on your initial viewing only. Although to be honest, I was enjoying the film for the first few minutes of it. I was wondering whether all the negative reviews about the film was just an exaggeration from the critic's side but as the movie progressed, I got to know about the pain and agony behind those lines written in every review out there. Race 3 tries to bring the Fast and Furious in the Bollywood style with all the family talks and an additional packing of Salman Khan. The film has all the necessary ingredients of a Bhai film - from his gravity-defying action sequences to his masculine body show; everything is here. But do all these things make the film worth your watch and money? Heck NO! This is by far, the worst instalment in the Race franchise and one of the worst movie to have come out in recent times.

Salman plays the character of Sikander Singh who is an adopted son of Shamsher Singh (Anil Kapoor). Sikander has a habit of carrying wingsuit along with him which helps him escaping difficult situations and even fast travelling to different places. Mouthing dialogues about "Parivaar", "Sanskaar" and "Rishte", this Salman has not yet recovered from the Prem Ratan Dhan Paayo hangover and brings the character traits of Yuvraj Vijay Singh to Sikander Singh. Bobby Deol is there with his constipated face trying hard to be the tough guy in the family. Saqib Saleem and Daisy Shah play as twins, and they do get on your nerves with all their irritating "bro" talks. Speaking of "bro" talks, the characters in the film say "bro" like a cool dude to one another, and one wonders if the writers were trying to resonate the characters with the modern youth, an attempt in which they miserably fail. Forget the "bro" word; the film contains dialogues like "Isse Dil Ni, Dell Khol Ke Dikhao", one also wonders whether the writers were high while writing the dialogues. Jacqueline Fernandez does what she is best at doing, looking pretty and doing some fantastic pole dance. Anil Kapoor is the only one who comes out unaffected in the film. He teaches us about how you can come out as the best among the lot even when the plot is miserable, and the movie is horrible. He fires bullets that end up burning a guy on a bike but the way he sells it is believable.

Remo D'Souza is among one of the best dancers in our country and can show you some killer moves if given a chance and a stage. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for his directorial skills as they are bland and uninteresting. He uses cheap editing for his shots and unnecessary cuts in his frames. The music was deafening during the action sequences and end up giving a headache. The excessive use of the slo-mo shots in the hope of giving it a stylish look end up being sluggish and drowsy. Unlike the previous films, the songs here are not memorable and are more laughable. The "Selfish" song written by our Bhai is the most laughable and absurd among the lot, even the films trademark song "Allah Duhai Hai" is reduced to a complete mess. The film doesn't even try to make an effort towards the songs, and they end up being forgettable.

The Race franchise is known for its exciting twists and turns. The first instalment had some of the best twists in store for us and even the second one had some predictable but good twists attached to it. Race 3 doesn't even excel in this department, in an attempt to shock the audience, the twists and turns seem to get out of place and are thrown randomly towards us. The big unfolding that happens during the climax turns out to be forced, atrocious and laughable.

I can go on and on ranting about the film but I think I have said enough and you would have got my point till now which is, STAY AWAY FROM IT. Race 3 does not even come close to a typical Salman Khan film and its best for both the Bhai fans and the general audience to keep a distance from it. A character in the movie while driving a vehicle says "Itne Saare Jhatke, When Is It Gonna End Man?" which is basically what the audience starts wondering after some time in the theatre.
