Terminal Movie Review - Stylish Revenge Gone Stale
Terminal follows the life of two assassins, a fatally ill teacher, a janitor and a waitress, all of whom become part of an evil mastermind's murderous plan.
Cast - Margot Robbie, Simon Pegg, Dexter Fletcher, Max Irons, Mike Myers
Directed By - Vaughn Stein
Genre - Noir Thriller
The sexy and cunning Annie (Margot Robbie) works as a waitress to hide her real identity of being a skilful murderer. At the beginning of the film, we are shown that she strikes a deal with mysterious someone for his work, all of it. When she is told that someone else is hired for this mysterious person's job, Annie assures him that they will be dead and she wants a fortnight to complete the task. She also asks a favour from him to find someone for her.
When the opening credits of the movie were shown to us with the actor's names on the signboards glowing with lights at the night time, I somewhat suspected that this is going to be style over substance film and by the end of it, my suspicion became true. This film indeed turned out to be style over substance category film. The filmmakers focused on making the movie stylish and beautiful and in their desperate attempts, the film lost its story and turned out to be a gorgeous looking bride without any soul. The non-linear storyline of the film may remind you of Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction where the timeline jumps from one scene to another. This movie has a lot of dutch angle shots which is apt here as the characters in the film are crazy and the dutch angle shot helps in displaying their insanity to us. The film has lots of neon lights scattered all over the place and the film looks bright because of it which apart from giving the film a stylish look, also tells that through all these lights the director wants to show us that you don't need darkness to hide a mystery as it can even be suppressed by throwing a lot of light in your way. It's like the director Vaughn Stein is mocking the audience through these bright glowing lights and saying to us that I have thrown light all over the place, but you still won't be able to see the twist coming your way which I admit was quite good. The production value of the film is another plus point of the movie as the sets are very impressing and admirable.
This film could have worked well and might have become a good suspense revenge movie, but the amount of spoon feeding in the film is damn too high. Director Vaughn Stein does not trust his audience and spoon feeds us by throwing in the visuals and scenes rather than letting the audience use their brains. I hate when a movie spoon feeds information to its audience as it tells that the director doesn't trust his audience and that stops the viewer in using their brains and watching the film more closely and intently. The characters are not properly fleshed out, and thus you don't connect or feel anything for them.
Margot Robbie is your perfect girl for playing the role of a crazy women, and in this movie too, you can see that she plays her part perfectly. She will remind you of her character of Harley Quinn from Suicide Squad. Simon Pegg is the other major highlight in the film, and whenever Margot and Simon have their scenes together in the movie, it becomes riveting to watch them conversing on screen. Dexter Fletcher, Max Irons and Mike Myers are also sincere in their parts and deliver a worthy performance in the film.
Terminal is not the best noir thriller suspense movie of the year, but if you want to get some ideas on how to make your film look stylish and cool, you can watch it and take away some ideas from it.
