Voice from the Stone Movie Review - Sound In Silence
A young and determined nurse is hired to help a boy who stops speaking after the death of his mother. He also listens to the walls of the castle and believes that he hears her mother speaking through the stones. Shot in Italy and starring Emilia Clarke as Verena, Voice from the Stone aspires to be a beautiful gothic film with horror and romance present in it.
Cast - Emilia Clarke, Marton Csokas, Edward George Dring, Caterina Murino, Remo Girone, Lisa Gastoni
Directed By - Eric Dennis Howell
Genre - Horror, Romance, Psychological Thriller
We have all heard of the saying "Experience comes from Age", and Verena (Emilia Clarke) gets the experience of handling the children by taking care of them through many years of her life. She gets splendid at her job and moves from family to family after her task is completed by taking care of the child in a family. Her job lands her at an isolated castle in Tuscany where she is hired to make the child named Jakob (Edward George Dring) speak again as he had gone mute after the death of his mother Malvina (Caterina Murino).
Director Eric Dennis Howell uses wide-angle shots through the majority of the film in an attempt to fully immerse the audience into the films scenic location and make us a part of it. The final result which comes out is a film so gorgeous and attractive that feasts your eyes in the most charming way possible for which the credit must also go to its magnificent cinematography by Peter Simonite. The way the objects and the surroundings are captured in the film are worth every praise. The film is successful in creating an atmosphere which shifts from thriller to romance whenever required. There is a jump scare in the movie which did not have any dramatic buildup or a deafening noise upon its arrival and this was the first time in a long time that I admired and loved a jump scare in a film. The steady camera shots in the movie provide relief and tension according to the events that unfold on screen. I loved the way the camera is handled in the film as it did not move at a breakneck pace or in a dramatic way to provide uneasiness to the viewer, it was steady and fixed most of the time, and it moved at a swift pace when the movement was required. The blowing of the winds and the chirping of the birds are also marvellously captured, and they help in providing a depth to the movie. Overall, the film excels in the technical department and passes with flying colours.
The film was marketed as a horror film but mind you; this is by no means a horror film. If you go in expecting a horror film with ghosts and objects flying in the air, you will end up disappointed. It is a psychological thriller and that too a very good one, and you must not confuse it with psychological horror. I have written horror in the genre section because the film was marketed as a horror film, but I assure you it is not a horror film so don't expect it to be one. Also, I would suggest you not to watch the trailers of this film as they give away many important scenes from the film and also mislead you into believing that it is a horror movie. It is also a romantic movie but the romance here is too quick, and many may find it unbelievable or underdeveloped. This movie is also about the relationship between a mother and a son and how a mother is important in a children's life as there is a loving bond between a mother and a child that cannot be replaced by a father and hence she is crucial in a child's life and also in a family. She completes the family and acts as a pillar to support the family.
Emilia Clarke who is famously known for her role as Daenerys Targaryen, the mother of the dragons, in the HBO's hit fantasy series Game of Thrones is exceptional and gives one of her best performance in the movie. Her motherly character in Game of Thrones where she has dragons as her children helps her in the film as here too she is required to be mother like and caring. Caterina Murino whom you may remember from Casino Royale (2006) and the Bollywood film Fever (2016) starring Rajeev Khandelwal has not much to do here. In fact, she barely has any screen time in the film but in whatever minimal shots she is present, she does a fine job, and nothing much can be said for her performance in the movie. I had never seen the other casts perform in any film or TV show and hence I was surprised by there acting skills in the movie. Marton Csokas does a terrific job of playing a concerned father who wants to improve the condition of his son. Edward George Dring as the young boy who has lost his mother and is not expecting a replacement anytime soon was also remarkable in his role. Remo Girone as the estate keeper Alessio successfully creeps out not only Verena but even you with his performance.
My major issue with the film is that it does not do a smart job in hiding the identity of Lilia (Lisa Gastoni) a retired housemaid who gets very polite with Verena and as a result you end up guessing what her character might end up being. If only her role was more carefully hidden and handled, you would have gotten surprised when the twist about her character is revealed in the film. It takes away a significant fun part from the movie. It is also a slow burner and hence, patience is required from the viewers side as it takes it's time to build up the plot.
Voice from the Stone is a beautiful movie about compassion with thrilling elements to it, and I suggest you to give it a try. I enjoyed watching this film and had a good time with it. Definitely worth a watch, at least once.
